This will be the easiest and cheapest Holiday project you do this year. Kids love making these!
Preheat your oven to 150 degrees F. Bake for about 2 hours, checking every half hour, flipping once midway. Remove when fully hardened. Decorate as desired. Full details are below.
To Make ‘Homemade Playdoh:’
- Flour
- Salt
Mix equal parts flour and salt. Add water 1 tsp at a time until a thick and workable consistency. Should not be too sticky and should still roll out easily. Sprinkle flour on your working surface.
Decorating Material Ideas:
- Cookie Cutters
- Stamps
- Copper or Craft Wire
- Twine or Ribbon
- Toothpicks
- Acrylic Paint
- Sugar or sparkles
- Coffee Grounds
- Mod Podge
Mix your homemade ‘play doh,’ roll out (sprinkle work surface with flour), cut shapes with cookie cutters, stamp with your desired wording (using toothpick to deepen/clarify the letter shapes so they show up better).
Add hole for twine or ribbon (or 2 holes for wire) and bake.
After removed from the oven and fully cooled, you can use wet, used coffee grounds to fill in the letters and ‘stain’ the ornament for a vintage/rustic look. It’s a little messy!
Sprinkle with sugar for shimmer and coat with Mod Podge to seal. I would imagine a used tea bag could also work for staining.
I really liked how the sugar sparkles next to the lights! I cannot wait to get these up on our Christmas tree and to make more for gifts!

Teal owl ornament below was painted with acrylic craft paints ($.79 to 1 each at most hobby stores). For the owl I used an iridescent gold shimmer paint.

This is awesome! We’re on a not-so-great budget this year, and this is a great idea for the holiday season. Do you think it would work for a handprint for my 6-month-old? I’d like to start a collection of those as a family tradition.

I understand. We are on a tight budget as well this Christmas. It’s nice to use stuff you may already have for a fun craft with the kids that could also make great gifts for grandparents, etc. My son painted his own- he made an alligator out of his plastic playdoh cutters. 🙂

I actually did handprints last year as gifts, so yes it will work! I put a little flour on their hands first so they didn’t stick when I put their hand in to make the impression.
